Wedding Photography Tips For Beginners

A wedding is exciting, the happiest day of two peoples lives. That is, unless you are the one who gets to take all the pictures of the two having the best day of their lives. It is tough work, but going into wedding photography with a plan can really help you calm your nerves and make this the best experience you can.

Wedding Photograph

In this article, you are going to learn the basics of what you need to be a successful wedding photographer. Having things like extra batteries, a shot list, and unlimited amounts of memory cards will really help out in the long run.

Use a Professional Camera

This goes without saying, but you should be using a D-SLR camera. This will give you the best results. A Canon 7D or even better a 5D will do wonders for you.

Batteries

For starters you are going to need extra batteries. Figure out how long a battery lasts, how long you will be there and double the amount of batteries you bring. Seriously running out of juice at the end of a perfect evening will be embarrassing.

A Shot List

Talk to your bride and groom beforehand and ask them if there are any shots they want. Then come up with about 20 more shots that need to happen throughout the night. Things like rings, a shot of the dress, and the wedding cake just to name a few.

Memory Cards

This is one to take to heart, buy very small size memory cards and have a ton of them. I am talking 2 GB cards max. Why? Because if a card fails you do not want to have the entire evening on one card do you. So having a lot of small size cards will keep you from losing all your shots.

Get an Itinerary

Knowing what is coming next is key when it comes to weddings. You will not have time to think things through all day so planning ahead and knowing what is next will help.

Have More than One Lens

Having at least two lenses with you would be a huge asset. Having a wide angle lens, a telephoto lens, and a normal lens would be ideal.

Use Black and White

Black and White photos are becoming more and more popular. When using your editing software such as Photoshop or light room do not be afraid to make some of your photos black and white.

Do Not Delete Photos

First of all you, do not have time to stand there and delete photos. Second, some of the best shots you have might be something that came out blurred or someone got in the way so save everything and go through them later.

These are some great tips for beginners to use when starting out in wedding photography. You will learn the ropes the more you do it. Above all else, have fun. If you are having fun then the ones who hired you will have fun too. That is the most important part of a wedding is to have fun. Now get out there and take some great pictures of lasting memories.
